Hogmanay in Edinburgh: Scotland’s New Year and your transfer plan

Torches down the Royal Mile, a street party on Princes Street and a city that treats New Year as a four-day festival. What to book, and how to get there.

Most cities do New Year’s Eve. Edinburgh does four days of it, and has done since the Reformation pushed Christmas into the background and left Hogmanay as Scotland’s midwinter festival. For the 2026/27 edition the programme runs from 29 December to 1 January, and the city fills: book flights, beds and tickets early, in that order.

What happens, and when

The shape of the festival is the same each year.

  • 29 December — the Torchlight Procession. Thousands of people carrying lit torches walk from the Meadows through the Old Town, led by pipe bands, drummers and fire performers. Participating is ticketed; watching from the pavement is free.
  • 30 December — the Night Afore concert at the Ross Bandstand, in Princes Street Gardens, under the castle.
  • 31 December — the Street Party along Princes Street, with stages, DJs and pipers, and the Concert in the Gardens. Both are ticketed and both sell out.
  • 1 January — the quiet day. Some years there is a swim in the Forth at South Queensferry; the city itself is sleepy until the afternoon.

Ticket prices vary by year and sell in tiers: expect roughly £25–35 to carry a torch, from around £33 for early-bird street party entry, and considerably more for the concert. Buy from the official festival site rather than a reseller, and buy before December.

Where to stand at midnight

The Street Party is the headline, but it is not the only option. The view from Calton Hill is free, wide and cold, and looks straight down Princes Street to the castle. Inverleith Park and Salisbury Crags also work. If you prefer walls and a roof, book a restaurant or a hotel bar months ahead — Edinburgh’s best tables on 31 December are gone by October.

Whatever you choose, plan how you are getting back. The city centre closes to traffic for the street party and the closures extend well beyond Princes Street.

If you are staying a few days

Edinburgh in winter is a good city for short daylight: the museums are free, the pubs are old and warm, and the castle is at its most atmospheric with rain coming sideways off the Forth. Dean Village and the Water of Leith walkway take an hour; Leith is where to eat.

Day trips work too. Stirling, with its castle on a crag and the Wallace Monument above it, is 45 minutes away and much quieter than the capital at New Year. The transfer from Glasgow airport to Stirling is 45 km, which makes it an easy half-day from either city.

What it is actually like

Hogmanay is colder and wetter than the photographs suggest, and better than they suggest too. Expect rain at some point, expect to be shoulder to shoulder on Princes Street, and expect complete strangers to shake your hand at midnight — the Scottish habit of first-footing, visiting a neighbour just after twelve with a gift, survives in a diluted form even among tourists.

Practical clothing beats party clothing. Waterproof coat, warm layers underneath, shoes you can stand in for four hours. There are no cloakrooms at a street party.

Booking, in order

  • Accommodation first, in September or October. Edinburgh’s beds for 31 December go earlier than its tickets.
  • Flights next — fares into Glasgow and Edinburgh both climb through November.
  • Event tickets third, from the official festival site, as soon as they go on sale.
  • Dinner reservations fourth. Restaurants in the Old Town take New Year bookings months ahead and many run a fixed menu.
  • Your transfer last, but before you fly: cars are scarce that night, and a booking made in advance is a booking at a normal price.

Getting there

Edinburgh has its own airport, but fares into Glasgow are often cheaper and the two cities are close. Our private transfer from Glasgow airport to Edinburgh covers the 90 km along the M8 in about 75 minutes, door to door, at a fixed price per vehicle.

Three reasons that matters at New Year. Trains between the cities are reduced and rammed on 31 December and 1 January. Taxi queues at midnight are long, and surge pricing is real. And a driver who knows which streets are shut will get you to a door rather than to a police barrier three streets away.

If you are staying in Glasgow itself — a good, cheaper base with its own New Year — the airport transfer into the city is 14 km and around 25 minutes.

The short version

  • 29 December to 1 January 2027; torchlight, concerts, street party.
  • Tickets from the official site, bought well before December.
  • Free alternatives at midnight: Calton Hill, Inverleith Park, Salisbury Crags.
  • Glasgow airport to Edinburgh: 90 km, about 75 minutes.
