Private transfer from Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh

Edinburgh splits into two halves that sit side by side. The medieval Old Town runs down the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, with the tenement closes and cobbled wynds that make driving slow. Across Princes Street Gardens lies the Georgian New Town, with wider grid streets around George Street and Charlotte Square. Down at the water, Leith has the Royal Yacht Britannia, Ocean Terminal and a run of restaurants along The Shore. In August the city fills for the Fringe and International Festival, and again at Hogmanay for New Year. Golfers head out to Musselburgh and North Berwick, while walkers climb Arthur's Seat or Calton Hill for the skyline. Most visitors base themselves in the centre, near Waverley or Haymarket stations.

The route is almost entirely motorway. From Glasgow Airport you join the M8 eastbound and follow it across the central belt, passing Livingston and the exits for the Livingston shopping centres and the Ratho area. It's flat, inland driving through farmland and small towns rather than any coastal or hill scenery. The journey is usually around 75 minutes, but the M8 is one of Scotland's busiest roads and can slow sharply around Glasgow at rush hour and near the Newbridge and Hermiston roundabouts on the Edinburgh approach. As you near the city the motorway ends and you filter onto local roads towards the centre. The final stretch into the Old Town means narrow, one-way and cobbled streets where the last few hundred metres take longer than you'd expect.

Note that this transfer starts at Glasgow Airport, not Edinburgh Airport, which sits much closer to the city — worth double-checking your booking if you have a choice of arrival airports. For central Old Town hotels, give the driver a clear drop-off point in advance, as many closes off the Royal Mile are pedestrianised and vehicles can only reach the nearest through-street. During August's festivals large parts of the centre have road closures and diversions, so allow extra time. If you're heading onward to Fife, North Berwick or the golf coast, that's beyond the city and a separate leg. Book earlier arrival buffers for morning flights, since the M8 slows badly between roughly 07:30 and 09:00 heading into Edinburgh, and again outbound in the late afternoon.
