The character changes after Bourg-Saint-Maurice, where the road climbs the D1090 and D902 through Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, with tight switchbacks and a steady gain in altitude to reach 2,100 metres at Tignes. On peak Saturdays in winter the Tarentaise corridor and the final climb can be slow, as this single valley feeds Tignes, Val d'Isère, Les Arcs and La Plagne all at once.
