The route is motorway almost the entire way. From Bilbao Airport you join the A-8 heading east, skirting the coast past San Sebastián, then cross into France near Irún and Hendaye where the road becomes the A63. This is a French toll motorway, so keep a card ready or expect toll booths. The terrain is rolling and green, with glimpses of the Bay of Biscay rather than mountain passes. Traffic thickens around San Sebastián at rush hour and around the Franco-Spanish border in peak summer. You exit at Biarritz and the final stretch runs through town streets, which narrow near the Old Port and Grande Plage. Total driving time is usually around an hour and three quarters.

Cross-border details matter here. Carry your passport or ID, as this is a Schengen internal crossing but police checks near Irún do happen. Note that France uses Central European Time, one hour ahead of Spain, so set your arrival expectations to local French time. If your hotel is in central Biarritz near the Grande Plage or Les Halles market, tell your driver the exact street: several are pedestrianised or one-way, and drop-off points differ. Summer weekends see heavy jams at the border and around Biarritz beaches, so allow extra time for onward plans. For golf resorts or villas in Anglet or Bilbao's coastal outskirts, confirm the specific gate or entrance in advance, since these often have more than one access point.
