From Athens Airport at Spata the route heads south rather than toward the city. Drivers usually take the Markopoulo road, pass the Markopoulo area, then turn southwest through Kalyvia Thorikou and drop down to the coast at Anavyssos. It is roughly 42 kilometres and, outside peak beach traffic, about 45 minutes. The terrain is inland and rolling for most of the way — vineyards, scrub and open country — before the road descends toward the bay and you get your first sight of the sea. The final approach is straightforward, not the tight hairpins you find further along the Sounion cliff road. Summer weekends can slow the last stretch as day-trippers head for the same beaches, so allow extra time on Friday evenings and Sunday returns.

Anavyssos spreads along the coast with houses set on hillside lanes above the main road, so give your driver the exact villa name, street or beach club rather than just "Anavyssos" — GPS pins in this area are often vague and some side streets are steep and unpaved. If you are staying in a rental with no street number, share a map location in advance. There is no motorway toll on this southbound route, unlike the drive into central Athens. Supermarkets in Anavyssos and neighbouring Saronida close early and options thin out at night, so if you arrive on a late flight, ask to stop for supplies in Markopoulo or Kalyvia on the way. For Sounion sunset trips, book the return leg, as taxis are scarce there after dark.
