The border comes at Ayamonte, where you cross the Guadiana river bridge into Portugal and continue on the A-22 (Via do Infante), a fast, quiet road running parallel to the coast. The terrain is mostly flat farmland and gentle hills, not mountain roads. The final stretch drops off the A-22 towards the coast; the last approach into central Albufeira and the Old Town is on narrower streets with tight turns and pedestrian zones.

Two things catch travellers out. First, Portugal is one hour behind Spain, so your arrival time in Albufeira will read an hour earlier than the clock you land on — factor this into check-in and dinner plans. Second, the A-22 in Portugal uses electronic tolls with no cash booths; a licensed transfer handles this, but keep it in mind if you ever self-drive. Given the distance, agree a pick-up buffer after landing and plan one rest stop, easily done at services near Seville or at Ayamonte. Central Albufeira restricts vehicle access in the Old Town, so drivers often set down at the nearest accessible point above the centre — confirm your exact hotel entrance in advance, especially for resort complexes near Oura or Falésia with several gates.
