The Sagrada Família: how to visit Barcelona’s basilica without the queues

Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece is the most visited monument in Spain. Here is how to book, when to go for the best light, and how to skip the worst of the crowds.

The Sagrada Família: how to visit Barcelona’s basilica without the queues

Antoni Gaudí knew he would never see his basilica finished. He worked on the Sagrada Família for over forty years and is buried in its crypt; construction has continued, on and off, since 1882. Today it is the most visited monument in Spain, and after more than a century the end is finally in sight, with the central Tower of Jesus Christ topping out to make it the tallest church in the world.

Book ahead — really

This is not a turn-up-and-queue kind of place. Tickets are timed and sold online, and the popular slots sell out days or even weeks in advance in high season. Buy directly from the official website, choose between a basic entry and an add-on that lets you climb one of the towers, and arrive a few minutes before your slot. There is no faster way to waste a Barcelona morning than standing outside without a booking.

The interior is the surprise. Gaudí designed the columns to branch like a forest and filled the walls with stained glass, so the whole space glows — warm reds and oranges on the eastern side in the morning, cool blues and greens on the western side in the late afternoon. Time your visit for early or late in the day and the light show alone is worth the ticket.

The towers

If you are comfortable with heights and tight spiral staircases, the tower climb gives you close-up views of the spires and out across the city. You go up by lift and walk down. It is an add-on to the standard ticket and worth it for the detail you simply cannot see from the ground.

Getting there

The basilica sits in the Eixample, easy to reach once you are in Barcelona, but most visitors arrive first from Barcelona El Prat (BCN), the cruise port or Sants station. A private transfer drops you at your hotel so you can plan your Sagrada Família slot around the light rather than your luggage. Book a Barcelona transfer or see our private transfers in Barcelona.
