Private transfer from Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport to Nungwi
Door-to-door transfer from Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport to Nungwi with professional driver, fixed price and flight monitoring included.
What Nungwi is known for
Nungwi sits at Zanzibar's northern tip, a fishing and dhow-building village that has grown into the island's busiest beach base. Unlike the east coast, its west-facing sand keeps deep water at low tide, so swimming and sunset views work all day. Divers and snorkellers use it as a launch point for Mnemba Atoll trips, and the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond near the lighthouse draws families. Kendwa, a short walk or drive south, hosts the full-moon parties. You'll still see boat-builders working the shoreline by hand. Peak season runs June to October and again around December to February; the long rains in April and May are quiet. Most visitors are here for diving, boat trips and beach days rather than the town sightseeing you'd find in Stone Town.
The drive north from the airport
Abeid Amani Karume International sits just south of Zanzibar Town, so the transfer runs almost the full length of the island's western side. The route skirts town and picks up the main northbound road toward Mahonda, then passes through inland villages such as Kinyasini before the road bends toward the coast at Nungwi. It's about 56 km and typically 90 minutes, though morning and late-afternoon traffic around town adds time. The road is tarmac for nearly the whole way but narrow, with speed bumps through each village, roadside markets, bicycles and the occasional daladala minibus. The final stretch into Nungwi becomes sandy and tight as it reaches the beach hotels, several of which share unmarked turnoffs. Expect flat terrain the entire way — no hills or winding climbs.
Practical tips for this route
Nungwi's hotels spread along the beach without clear street numbers, so give your driver the exact hotel name and, ideally, a WhatsApp contact from the property — the last few hundred metres are sandy lanes where a wrong turn means backtracking. Book the transfer to cover the whole distance; taxis waiting at the beach for the return can be scarce late in the day. There are ATMs and a few shops in Nungwi village, but stock up on cash before leaving town if you want more options. If you land in the dark, the village approach has little lighting, so a pre-arranged pickup avoids confusion. For sunset boat trips or a Mnemba dive the next morning, arrange your onward pickup time with the hotel the night before, as early departures leave before reception is fully staffed.
