Podgora sits on the Makarska Riviera, strung along the coast beneath the sheer wall of Biokovo mountain, a few kilometres south of Makarska. It's a summer town of pebble beaches, small harbours and a seafront promenade lined with cafés and konobas. On the hill above the village stands the Galebova krila (Seagull's Wings) monument to the Croatian navy, a well-known local landmark. Most visitors are families and couples who come between June and September for swimming, boat trips and day drives up to Biokovo Nature Park. The airport sits inland at Zemunik, so the driver first joins the A1 motorway and heads south. The A1 does almost all the work here: a fast inland run past Šibenik and Split with the mountains on your left and only occasional sea views. You leave the motorway near the southern end, typically at Zagvozd, then pass through the Sveti Ilija tunnel that cuts under Biokovo and drops you out above the coast near Baška Voda. The last stretch is the D8 Adriatic coastal road through Makarska and south to Podgora, a two-lane road hugging the shoreline with bends and sea on your right. Expect roughly two and a half to three hours in normal conditions; the motorway portion is smooth, and the winding, scenic part is only the final descent and coast road.

This is a long transfer, so it's worth timing it well. In July and August the D8 coastal road through Makarska, Tučepi and Podgora slows to a crawl in the late afternoon, so an earlier arrival or an evening departure avoids the worst. Tell your driver in advance which part of Podgora you need: the seafront apartments, the harbour, or accommodation up on the Biokovo slope reached by steep, narrow side lanes where a large vehicle can't always get to the door. There are motorway service stops around Šibenik and near Split for a break and toilets, useful with children.
