What Gradac offers at the southern end of the Makarska Riviera
Gradac is the last coastal town on the Makarska Riviera before the Neretva delta and Ploče. Its main draw is Gornja Vala, a pebble beach running well over a kilometre along the seafront, shaded by pines and backed by a promenade of cafés and small hotels. The Biokovo massif rises directly behind the town, so guests often pair beach days with drives up to the Biokovo Skywalk near Makarska. Families and repeat summer visitors dominate July and August, drawn by clear, shallow entries and calm bays. The compact old core sits around the small harbour, with the neighbouring hamlet of Podaca just up the coast. It is quieter than Makarska or Brela, which is exactly why many return.
The A1 motorway drive south from Zadar to Gradac
This is a long transfer of roughly 250 km, most of it on the A1 motorway heading southeast past Šibenik and Split. The motorway runs inland through karst terrain, with long tunnels near Split and views toward the Dinaric ranges rather than the sea for much of the way. The usual exit is Ravča, after which the road drops down toward the coast, passing Vrgorac and descending through the hills to meet the Adriatic near Gradac and Podaca. Expect around three hours in normal conditions. The final stretch is more winding as you leave the motorway and come down to sea level, and summer weekends can slow the descent to the coast as day-trippers head for the same beaches.
Practical points for arriving in Gradac by private car
Because the drive is around three hours, it is worth requesting a comfort stop; the rest area near Biograd or the services around Split are the natural halfway points. Split Airport is actually closer to Gradac than Zadar, so if your flight options allow, compare both before booking a Zadar transfer. Gradac's seafront lanes are narrow and partly pedestrianised in summer, so confirm your exact apartment or hotel address in advance; many properties sit on the slope above Gornja Vala with limited vehicle access, and the driver may drop you at the nearest reachable point. For late arrivals, note that shops and restaurants in Gradac close earlier than in larger resorts, so arrange any groceries or dinner beforehand.
