Sirmione sits on a long, thin peninsula reaching into the southern end of Lake Garda. The historic centre is entered over a drawbridge beside the Castello Scaligero, a 13th-century moated castle whose towers you can climb. At the tip of the peninsula are the Grotte di Catullo, the ruins of a large Roman villa, with olive groves and lake views around them. Sirmione is also a thermal town: sulphur springs feed the Terme di Sirmione and the Aquaria spa. Swimmers head to the rocky Jamaica Beach near the Roman ruins and to Lido delle Bionde. Day-trippers and spa guests dominate spring through autumn, families in high summer. The mainland districts of Colombare and Lugana, the latter known for its white wine, are quieter and residential.

The route is short and almost entirely motorway. From Verona Villafranca Airport you join the A4 Milano–Venezia and head west, leaving at the Sirmione exit near Colombare. The terrain is flat farmland and the Lugana vineyards, so there is little winding until the very end. The whole run is roughly 35 km and, with normal traffic, around 40 minutes. Cars cannot drive into the walled old town, which is pedestrian beyond the drawbridge. Depending on where you are staying, the driver will set you down at the edge of the historic centre near the castle, or at a hotel in Colombare or Lugana on the mainland side of the peninsula. In summer the last stretch along the peninsula road can back up with beach and spa traffic.

If your hotel is inside the walls, tell the driver its name in advance: vehicle access past the drawbridge is restricted to residents and permit holders, so you will be dropped at the nearest legal point and walk the final few minutes over cobbled, often crowded lanes. Pack light or bring a bag you can wheel or carry, as those streets and the bridge are not made for large suitcases. Traffic peaks on summer weekends and during spa-season afternoons, so an early arrival slot makes the peninsula approach smoother. For the return, agree a pickup point on the mainland edge rather than deep in the old town. If you plan to visit the Grotte di Catullo, note it closes on Mondays outside peak periods.
