The terrain is level farmland most of the way, so there's little winding until you drop toward the lake. Expect roughly 35 kilometres and about 35 minutes in normal traffic. The final stretch from the motorway exit into the town centre and down to the port area is on local roads that narrow near the old town, and parking close to the harbour is limited. On summer weekends the A4 and the exit slip road back up, particularly on Friday afternoons and Sunday returns.

Give your driver the exact address, not just "Desenzano": the town spreads from the port up to Rivoltella and inland, and hotels along the lakefront are on streets closed or restricted to traffic in the centre. If your accommodation is inside the pedestrian zone near Piazza Malvezzi or the Porto Vecchio, expect to be dropped at the nearest accessible point and to walk the last minutes with luggage. Many lakeside hotels have their own small car parks—ask which entrance to use. If you're heading onward to Sirmione, note that Desenzano is the practical mainland arrival point and ferries or a separate transfer take you across. For summer arrivals, build in extra time on Fridays and Sundays when the A4 near the exit slows considerably.
