What Castello is and who stays there
Castello is the largest and easternmost sestiere of Venice, stretching from behind Piazza San Marco out to the working docks. It holds the Arsenale, the old naval shipyard, and the Giardini and Arsenale venues that host the Art and Architecture Biennale in alternate years, drawing crowds each spring through autumn. Via Garibaldi, a wide former canal, is where locals still do their shopping and eat away from the tourist crush. Further east, San Pietro di Castello and the quiet Sant'Elena district feel residential. People choose Castello to be near San Marco without paying San Marco prices, and Biennale visitors book here to walk to the pavilions. Riva degli Schiavoni runs along the waterfront with the larger hotels.
How the transfer reaches Castello
No car reaches Castello, because central Venice has no roads. A road vehicle from Marco Polo crosses the mainland on the SR11 and the Ponte della Libertà causeway to Piazzale Roma, the only point in Venice a car can enter — roughly 13 km and 25 to 35 minutes depending on causeway traffic, which builds on summer weekends. From Piazzale Roma, Castello is a long haul on foot across the whole city, so most travellers switch to a vaporetto (line 1 or 2 along the Grand Canal) or a water taxi. A water taxi can run directly from the airport dock at Tessera through the lagoon to a Castello canal near your accommodation, avoiding Piazzale Roma entirely.
Practical advice for arriving in Castello
Decide before you land whether you want the road transfer to Piazzale Roma or a water taxi. The road option is cheaper but leaves you dragging luggage over bridges with steps, and Castello has some of the longest walks from Piazzale Roma of any sestiere. If your hotel sits on a canal, a water taxi to the nearest dock usually saves real effort. Confirm the exact water entrance or the closest vaporetto stop — Arsenale, Giardini, San Zaccaria and Sant'Elena all serve different parts of Castello. During Biennale months, the Giardini and Arsenale area gets busy; arrive with your venue address written down. Note that the airport water docks are a signposted walk from the arrivals terminal, not right outside.
