Private transfer from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Chioggia
Door-to-door transfer from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Chioggia with professional driver, fixed price and flight monitoring included.
What Chioggia is known for
Chioggia sits at the southern tip of the Venetian Lagoon and works as a real fishing town rather than a museum. Its spine is the Corso del Popolo, a wide pedestrian street lined with cafés, running parallel to the Canal Vena where fishing boats still moor. The morning fish market near Ponte Vigo is the busiest in the Adriatic, and the church of San Domenico holds a Carpaccio painting. Across the bridge lies Sottomarina, a long sandy beach with rows of lidos that fill with Italian families from June to September. Day-trippers come for grilled seafood and the quieter, cheaper alternative to central Venice. Further south, Isola Verde and the Brenta river mouth draw campers and cyclists. Off-season, Chioggia stays lived-in, with locals doing their shopping along the canals.
The drive south along the SS309 Romea
The route leaves the airport, skirts Mestre and Marghera, and then follows the SS309 Romea heading south. This is the main road down the mainland edge of the lagoon: flat coastal plain the whole way, crossing the Brenta and Adige rivers on long bridges, with drainage canals and farmland on either side. It is a single-carriageway trunk road for much of the distance rather than a motorway, so lorry traffic and roundabouts can slow the pace, especially on summer weekends. The final approach turns off the Romea and crosses onto the Sottomarina spit, or into Chioggia's old town over its bridges. Expect the journey to take around an hour in normal conditions. There is little scenery of note until the lagoon and beach appear near the end.
Practical tips for arriving in Chioggia
Confirm exactly where your accommodation is: Chioggia's historic centre is largely pedestrian, with narrow lanes off the Corso del Popolo where a car cannot reach the door, so the driver may drop you at the nearest bridge or car park. Sottomarina's hotels and campsites are easier, being laid out along Viale Mediterraneo and the beachfront, but ask for the specific lido or street number. The SS309 backs up on Saturday mornings in July and August when beach traffic peaks, so allow extra time for a flight or a booked table. If you want to visit central Venice during your stay, the practical option is the bus and ferry from Chioggia to Pellestrina and the Lido rather than driving back north. Bring cash for the fish market, which opens early and closes by midday.
