What Sozopol is and who goes there
Sozopol sits on a small peninsula south of Burgas, split between the Old Town of narrow cobbled lanes and wooden National Revival houses, and the newer Harmanite quarter. Founded as ancient Apollonia, it draws visitors to the Archaeological Museum, the Church of St George, and boat trips to St Ivan Island, where relics linked to John the Baptist were found. Families favour the sheltered Central and Harmanite beaches within walking distance of town, while younger crowds head to Kavatsi and Smokinya, the wider sand strips a few kilometres south near the campsites. Peak season runs July and August; early September brings the Apollonia arts festival and quieter streets. The Old Town lanes are pedestrian-heavy and tight, so many stays are reached on foot from a drop-off point.
The coastal drive south past Burgas
The route runs south on the E87 coastal corridor, the main road linking Varna with the southern Black Sea coast. The first stretch climbs through wooded foothills of the eastern Stara Planina around Byala and Obzor, where the road winds and slows before dropping back to the shore. It then passes the resort belt of St Vlas, Sunny Beach and Nessebar, followed by Pomorie and its salt lagoons, before reaching Burgas. Expect the heaviest traffic here in July and August, especially near the Sunny Beach junctions. South of Burgas the road narrows again through Chernomorets before the final approach into Sozopol. Total driving time is usually around two and a half hours, longer at summer weekends when the Obzor section and the Burgas ring road back up.
Practical tips for arriving in Sozopol
If your accommodation is inside the Old Town, tell the driver in advance: the peninsula's lanes are too narrow and steep for a full drop at the door, and vehicles usually stop at the edge near the town gate, leaving a short walk over uneven cobbles — pack accordingly if you have wheeled luggage. For stays in Harmanite, Kavatsi or the campsite area south of town, drop-offs are simpler. This is a long transfer for a beach town, so ask about a comfort or refreshment stop; the Kamchia or Obzor area works well roughly midway. If you are combining Sozopol with a flight, note that Burgas Airport is much closer than Varna, so Varna transfers usually suit travellers already in the north. Book return pick-ups early in high summer, when the E87 slows.
