Nessebar splits into two parts. The Old Town sits on a rocky peninsula linked to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, and it's a UNESCO site full of cobbled lanes, timber-framed National Revival houses and medieval churches like Christ Pantocrator and St Stephen. Cars are heavily restricted inside, so most drop-offs are at the isthmus gate. New Nessebar, on the mainland, has the modern hotels and holiday apartments. Right next door to the north is Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag), Bulgaria's biggest resort strip, and beyond it Sveti Vlas with its Marina Dinevi yacht harbour. Families and beach holidaymakers fill the area from June to September; the Old Town also draws day-trippers year-round for its history. The village of Ravda lies just to the south.

The route runs south from Varna Airport on Route 9 (the E87 coastal corridor), the main road linking the northern and southern Black Sea coasts. You'll pass through or around Byala and Obzor, where the road climbs over the wooded foothills of the Stara Planina before dropping back toward the sea. That mid-section is the most noticeable part of the drive: some bends, gradients and slower traffic in summer, when this single artery gets busy with resort-bound cars and coaches. After the descent the land flattens out toward Sunny Beach and Nessebar. The whole trip is around 90 kilometres and usually takes about an hour and twenty minutes, though July and August queues near Sunny Beach can add time. Expect sea views on much of the coastal stretches.

Tell your driver exactly where you're staying, because "Nessebar" covers several areas. If your hotel is inside the Old Town peninsula, the driver can only reach the isthmus gate — from there it's a short walk on foot over cobbles, so pack for wheeling luggage a little distance. Hotels in New Nessebar or Sunny Beach have proper vehicle access. Note that Sunny Beach is a sprawling resort with many separate complexes and entrances, so a specific hotel name and block number saves confusion. In peak summer, factor extra time for coastal traffic if you have a ferry, tour or dinner booking. Outside the June–September season many resort hotels and restaurants close, so confirm your accommodation is open before travelling, especially for late-autumn or winter arrivals.
