What Moraira is known for
Moraira is a low-rise resort in the Teulada municipality, kept deliberately free of tower blocks by local planning rules, which sets it apart from nearby Calpe. The main town beach, Playa de l'Ampolla, sits beside the fishing harbour and the small 18th-century Castillo de Moraira on the seafront. A short walk or drive north brings you to El Portet, a sheltered cove popular with families and swimmers, and to the Cap d'Or headland with its medieval watchtower. The Club Náutico marina draws sailing visitors, and there's a large Friday market. Many residents are British, German and Dutch, some year-round, so the town stays busy well into autumn rather than shutting down after summer.
The drive south along the AP-7
From Valencia Airport you head onto the V-31 and around the city before joining the AP-7/A-7 motorway south down the coast. Most of the journey is straightforward dual-carriageway driving through the flatter countryside around Cullera, Gandía and Oliva, with the sea to your left for long stretches. Once past Benissa the road leaves the motorway and the character changes: the CV-746 descends toward the coast through terraced hillsides, and the final few kilometres into Moraira are noticeably winding as the road drops to sea level. Expect around an hour and a half in normal traffic. Summer weekends and the section near Gandía can slow things down, so allowing extra time is sensible when catching a flight home.
Practical tips for arriving in Moraira
Many Moraira villas sit on the urbanisations climbing the hills behind the town — areas like El Portet, Benimeit, Cometa and Moravit — where lanes are steep, narrow and poorly signposted. Have the exact villa name, urbanisation and a pin location ready, as GPS often struggles with these addresses. If you're staying in the town centre, note that the streets near the harbour and market area are tight and partly pedestrianised, so your driver may set you down at the nearest accessible point. Moraira has no train station and limited public transport, so a pre-booked door-to-door transfer is far more practical than connecting through Alicante or Benidorm. For late flights, remember the winding final descent adds time after dark.
