What to expect in Bardonecchia
Bardonecchia sits at the western end of the Susa Valley, close to the Fréjus tunnel and the French border. In winter it draws skiers to four linked areas — Campo Smith, Colomion, Melezet and Jafferau — with Campo Smith's slopes running almost into town. It hosted the snowboard events at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. The pedestrian Via Medail is the main artery, lined with shops and cafés, and the old Borgo Vecchio quarter clusters around the San Ippolito church and its bell tower. In summer the same valleys fill with hikers and cyclists heading toward the Colle della Scala and the Monti della Luna. Families and weekenders from Turin make up much of the crowd, along with French visitors crossing the border.
The drive up the Susa Valley
From Turin Airport at Caselle the route skirts the city on the tangenziale ring road, then joins the A32 Torino–Bardonecchia motorway, which climbs steadily westward through the Susa Valley. It is motorway almost the entire way, so the journey is straightforward despite the gain in altitude. The valley narrows as you pass Susa and Oulx, and the A32 runs through a long series of tunnels and viaducts as the terrain becomes properly alpine. Bardonecchia is the final exit before the Fréjus tunnel into France, so there is little chance of overshooting. The last stretch off the motorway is short, leading directly into the resort. In clear weather you get views of the surrounding peaks; in winter the upper valley can carry snow while Turin stays dry.
Practical advice for this transfer
Bardonecchia is spread across several distinct neighbourhoods and ski-area bases — Campo Smith, Melezet and Les Arnauds are each a few minutes apart by road — so tell your driver the exact address or lift base, not just the town name. Many apartments sit above the pedestrian Via Medail, where vehicle access is restricted; expect the drop-off to be at the nearest permitted point with a short walk to your door. In winter, carry ski gear expectations up front, as luggage space matters with hard cases and boot bags. Weekend afternoons on the A32 can slow near Oulx as day-trippers head back toward Turin, so allow extra time for return trips to catch a flight. Check whether your accommodation has parking if you plan to combine the transfer with local car hire.
