Piran sits on a narrow peninsula on Slovenia's Istrian coast, wrapped by the Adriatic on three sides. The old town is car-free, with tight stone lanes climbing to St George's Parish Church and its bell tower, which overlooks the red rooftops and the sea. The centre is Tartini Square, named after the violinist Giuseppe Tartini, ringed by cafés and Venetian-Gothic façades. At the peninsula's tip stands the Punta lighthouse. Neighbouring Portorož, a short distance away, has the sandy beaches, spa hotels and marina; Fiesa lies just north with a small bathing area. Summer brings day-trippers and families; spring and autumn suit walkers exploring the town walls and the Sečovlje salt pans to the south. Book restaurants near the waterfront ahead in July and August.

Trieste Airport is at Ronchi dei Legionari, north of Trieste, so the route runs south past the city before reaching the Slovenian coast. The driver takes the motorway around Trieste, crosses the Italy–Slovenia border near Škofije, then follows the coastal expressway past Koper and Izola. Most of the journey is straightforward dual-carriageway with sea views opening up beyond Koper. The final stretch descends through Portorož and then narrows as you approach Piran itself. Total road time is usually a little over an hour, traffic permitting. Because Piran's old town is closed to non-resident cars, the natural drop-off is at the edge of town rather than at your accommodation's front door. Carry your passport or ID card even though this is an internal EU crossing, as spot checks do happen.

Vehicles can go as far as the Fornače car park (Garaža Arze) at the entrance to Piran; from there a free town shuttle bus runs to Tartini Square, or it's a walk of roughly ten minutes along the waterfront. Confirm with your accommodation whether they can arrange a permit for a closer drop-off, as some hotels have limited access. Pack light where you can: the lanes up toward St George's are steep and cobbled, and wheeled cases are awkward on them. If you're staying in Portorož instead, the driver can usually reach the hotel entrance directly, since that area is not pedestrianised. Slovenia uses the euro, so no currency change is needed from Italy, and a motorway vignette applies to the Slovenian expressways, which a licensed transfer already covers.
