Why people travel to Lourdes
Lourdes draws millions each year to the Sanctuary of Our Lady, built around the Grotto of Massabielle where Bernadette Soubirous reported her apparitions in 1858. Most visitors come for the Rosary Basilica, the underground Basilica of St Pius X, the baths, and the evening torchlight procession from April to October. Many are pilgrims, organised parish groups, and travellers with reduced mobility, so the town is unusually well set up for wheelchairs and stretchers. Beyond the religious sites, the medieval Château fort de Lourdes overlooks the Gave de Pau, and the Pic du Jer funicular climbs to a viewpoint over the Pyrenees. Hotels cluster tightly along the Avenue Bernadette Soubirous and the streets leading to the Sanctuary entrances.
The A64 drive south to the Pyrenees
The route leaves Toulouse-Blagnac and joins the A64 (La Pyrénéenne) motorway, which runs southwest across flat farmland and gentle hills for most of the journey. You pass close to Muret and Saint-Gaudens before the Pyrenees begin to fill the horizon ahead. The motorway carries you almost all the way, exiting near Tarbes onto the shorter road into Lourdes itself. Expect roughly two hours door to door, with little in the way of winding roads until the final approach. The last stretch into Lourdes is straightforward, though the streets near the Sanctuary are narrow and become congested during major pilgrimage dates. On a clear day the snow-capped peaks are visible for much of the second half of the drive.
Planning your arrival in Lourdes
Many Lourdes hotels sit on pedestrianised or restricted streets close to the Sanctuary, so tell your driver the exact hotel name and street rather than just "the Grotto" — drop-off points vary. If you are travelling with a wheelchair, stretcher, or a large group, confirm this when booking so the right vehicle is arranged; the town's layout means the closest legal stop can still be a short walk from the entrance gates. During the main pilgrimage season and around feast days such as 15 August, traffic and parking near the Sanctuary are heavily controlled, so allow extra time. A private transfer avoids the change at Tarbes station that rail travellers face, and works well if your flight lands late, when onward local transport is limited.
