What draws people to Carcassonne
Carcassonne is split into two parts, and most visitors come for the Cité, the walled medieval fortress with its double ramparts, 52 towers and the Château Comtal. It sits on a hill east of the river Aude, reached across the Pont Vieux from the Bastide Saint-Louis, the grid-plan lower town where the train station, market square (Place Carnot) and most restaurants are. Summer brings heavy day-tripper crowds and the Festival de Carcassonne in July, with concerts inside the fortress. The Canal du Midi passes through the Bastide, popular with boaters and cyclists. Many travellers use the city as a base for the Corbières and Minervois wine areas and Cathar castles like Lastours, a short drive north.
The A61 drive south from Blagnac
The route runs almost entirely on motorway. From Toulouse-Blagnac, on the western side of Toulouse, the driver skirts the city on the ring road (rocade) before joining the A61 heading southeast toward Narbonne. It is a toll road, so expect the péage barriers near Toulouse and again on approach. The landscape is flat to gently rolling Lauragais farmland, with the Montagne Noire visible to the north and the Pyrenees on the horizon to the south on clear days. Traffic on the Toulouse rocade can add time at peak hours; the open stretch afterwards is fast. Leaving at exit 24 (Carcassonne Ouest) or exit 23 brings you into the city in a few minutes. Total driving time is usually around an hour outside rush periods.
Practical notes for the Carcassonne arrival
Decide in advance whether you want to be dropped in the Bastide or up at the Cité. Cars cannot enter the walled fortress, so a Cité hotel drop means stopping at the Porte Narbonnaise gate area or a nearby car park, then walking the last stretch on cobbles — pack light or use a small bag for that. Hotels inside the Cité often have restricted vehicle access; check with yours. In July the festival closes some streets and parking near the fortress fills early. The Bastide's streets around Place Carnot are narrow and partly pedestrian, so drop-offs are usually at a corner rather than the door. If you plan wine-country day trips, arranging the same driver saves hunting for taxis, as rural buses are infrequent.
