Ulcinj sits at Montenegro's southern tip, close to the Albanian border, and has a strong Albanian character in its language, food and call to prayer. The walled Old Town (Stari Grad) rises above Mala Plaža, the small town beach. A few kilometres south begins Velika Plaža, a 12-kilometre sand strip that draws families and, at Ada Bojana at its far end, kitesurfers and naturists near the river mouth. The Ulcinj Salina salt pans attract flamingos and birdwatchers in spring and autumn, while Valdanos Bay is a pebbly cove ringed by old olive groves. Summer brings the busiest crowds; the shoulder seasons suit walkers and birders who want the beaches and lagoons quieter.

From Tivat the driver heads south past Budva, then joins the corridor toward Bar. The efficient way is the Sozina tunnel, a toll tunnel over four kilometres long that cuts under the mountains and saves the slow coastal climb over the pass. After the tunnel the road drops toward Bar and follows the coast to Ulcinj. Expect roughly 85 kilometres and around an hour and three-quarters, longer in July and August when Budva and Petrovac clog with beach traffic. The terrain shifts from the enclosed Bay of Kotor to open Adriatic coastline and dry, olive-covered hills near Ulcinj. The final approach into town is a winding descent, and the streets around the Old Town are narrow and steep.

Tell the driver in advance whether you are staying in the town centre near Mala Plaža or out along Velika Plaža, because the beach resorts and campsites stretch several kilometres and some access lanes off the main road are unmarked and sandy. Cars cannot enter the Old Town's alleys, so expect a short walk with luggage if your accommodation is inside the walls. Carry euros in cash: many small guesthouses, beach bars and the Ada Bojana access booths prefer it. If you plan to cross into Albania (Shkodër is close), confirm this at booking, as not every vehicle is insured for the border. The Sozina tunnel toll is paid by the driver en route, and traffic backs up at the Bar approach on peak summer weekends.
