Herceg Novi sits at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, and its Old Town is built as a series of stone stairways climbing from the seafront up past the Forte Mare fortress, the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) and the Kanli Kula fortress above it. The waterfront promenade, the Pet Danica, runs for a couple of kilometres east toward Igalo, known for the mud and mineral spa treatments at the Igalo Institute. Beaches here are mostly concrete platforms and pebble coves rather than sand. Visitors come in summer for the swimming and the Mimosa Festival crowds in winter, plus older travellers year-round for the spa cures. Rose and Žanjice, reached by boat from the harbour, are popular day trips.

There are two ways to cover this route, and both matter to your timing. The shorter option uses the Kamenari–Lepetane car ferry, which crosses the narrow neck of the bay in about ten minutes and cuts the distance considerably. The alternative is the road all the way around the inner bay through Kotor and Risan, which is scenic but far longer. Most transfers take the ferry when the wait is reasonable. From the airport you skirt the edge of Tivat, follow the coast to Lepetane, cross, then continue along the shore through Kamenari and Zelenika into Herceg Novi. The final approach hugs the water with regular bends and passes below the town before the descent toward Igalo and the Old Town.

Ask your driver to use the Kamenari ferry; in July and August the queue for cars can build up, especially late morning and early evening, so an early flight often means a smoother crossing. Herceg Novi's Old Town is pedestrian and stepped, so vehicles cannot reach the seafront directly — most transfers drop off at the top near the Kanli Kula or at a road-accessible point, and you finish on foot down the stairs. Tell your driver in advance if your accommodation is in Igalo, Savina, Meljine or Zelenika, as these are strung along the coast and the correct drop-off saves a walk. If you need the spa institute in Igalo, name it specifically. Bring cash for the ferry if arranging return yourself.
