Bar sits at Montenegro's southern coast and works as the country's main commercial port, with the ferry line to Bari and Ancona in Italy running from the harbour. Most visitors are drawn to Stari Bar, the ruined old town set a few kilometres inland below Rumija mountain, and to the ancient olive grove at Mirovica, home to a tree said to be over 2,000 years old. King Nikola's Palace and the marina anchor the modern seafront town. The pebble beaches at Sutomore and Šušanj fill with families in July and August, while spring and autumn bring hikers heading up Rumija. Bar also has a large resident population, so it feels like a working town rather than a pure resort.

The route follows the Adriatic Highway (Jadranska magistrala) south. Leaving Tivat you skirt the bay, climb over the ridge behind Budva, then run above Petrovac and its coves before dropping toward Sutomore. Much of the drive hugs the coastline with sea on one side and hillside on the other, so it is scenic but includes long stretches of bends rather than motorway. Near Sutomore the road passes through a tunnel before reaching Bar. Expect roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half depending on summer traffic, which can build sharply around Budva in July and August. There is no continuous motorway on this corridor, so the timing reflects real coastal-road conditions, not a straight-line estimate.

If your final stop is Stari Bar rather than the seafront, tell the driver in advance: the old town is uphill and inland, reached by a separate winding lane, not the coastal boulevard. Travellers catching the ferry to Italy should allow extra buffer time, as check-in at the port closes well before departure and summer queues at the terminal are common. In peak season the Budva stretch is the main bottleneck, so an early-morning or late-evening transfer moves faster. Bar has fewer taxis waiting than the busier resorts further north, which makes a pre-booked pickup worthwhile if you arrive on a late flight. Bring layers in shoulder season: the coast stays mild but the drive over the ridges can feel noticeably cooler.
