Ferries to the Sporades and Halkidiki buses leave from here too, so many travellers use the city as a base before moving on to Kassandra or Sithonia.

Makedonia Airport (SKG) sits at Mikra, southeast of the city near the suburb of Thermi. The route runs along the coast on the Thessaloniki–Nea Moudania road and then the seafront axis, or via the inner ring road for the western and upper districts. It's roughly 16 kilometres and usually 20 to 30 minutes, though the stretch past Kalamaria and the New Waterfront can slow at rush hour. The drive is flat and largely urban once you leave the airport, with the gulf on your left as you approach the centre. If your accommodation is in Ano Poli, expect a steep, narrow final climb through one-way lanes where larger vehicles cannot always reach the door.

Traffic on the coastal approach peaks on weekday mornings and around the evening seafront stroll, so allow extra time if you have a ferry or an onward Halkidiki bus. For central hotels near Aristotelous or the Ladadika, ask to be dropped at the nearest open street, as parts of the centre are pedestrianised. In Ano Poli, share your exact address in advance; some cobbled lanes force a short walk uphill with luggage. If you're continuing to Kassandra or Sithonia, note the KTEL Chalkidikis bus terminal is on the city's west side, not near the airport, so a transfer straight there can save backtracking. Summer heat is intense midday, so a bottle of water for the ride is worth carrying.
