What Paralia Katerinis is known for
Paralia Katerinis is the beach resort of Katerini, spread along a wide strip of grey-gold sand on the Thermaic Gulf in the Pieria region. The seafront is packed with tavernas, souvenir shops, beach bars and mid-range hotels, and the water stays shallow for a long way out, which is why it draws so many families. In summer it fills with visitors from Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania, plus Greek holidaymakers. Just south lie Olympiaki Akti and, further on, Neoi Poroi, while Mount Olympus rises inland behind Katerini town. Day-trippers use it as a base for Dion's archaeological park and the Olympus foothills. It's busiest from June to early September and much quieter the rest of the year.
The drive south on the A1 motorway
The route runs almost entirely on the A1 (Aegean Motorway, part of the PATHE corridor) heading south-west from the airport toward Athens. You skirt the western edge of Thessaloniki, cross the flat plain around the Axios and Aliakmonas rivers, and pass the tolls near Malgara. The terrain is level farmland for most of the way, with Mount Olympus growing on your right as you approach Pieria. You leave the motorway at the Katerini exit and follow a short local road east through Korinos toward the coast. The final few kilometres are on ordinary roads that get slow and congested in high summer, especially near the resort's entrances. Total driving time is usually around an hour outside peak traffic.
Practical tips for this transfer
Paralia Katerinis is not a single hotel zone but a grid of numbered streets running back from the seafront, so give your driver the exact hotel name and street rather than just "Paralia" — addresses repeat and the one-way system makes wrong turns costly. In July and August the coastal approach and the parallel streets clog with cars and pedestrians in the evening, so allow extra time if you have a flight to catch on departure. Many properties here are small apartment blocks without clear drop-off points; ask your host in advance where a car can stop. If you're continuing to Dion, Litochoro or the Olympus trailheads, it's worth arranging that leg at the same time, as local taxis can be scarce at the height of the season.
