Litochoro sits on the eastern slope of Mount Olympus at around 300 metres, and most people arrive to walk the mountain. The trailhead at Prionia, reached by a winding road above the town, is the usual start for the climb toward the Spilios Agapitos refuge and Mytikas, the highest peak in Greece. The Enipeas Gorge trail begins near the town itself. Hikers dominate from late spring to early autumn, when the high refuges are open. The compact old town has a central square lined with tavernas, and the coast at Plaka Litochoro and Gritsa, a few kilometres downhill, draws families to the beach in summer. Off-season it stays quiet, used mainly by residents and weekend visitors from Thessaloniki and Katerini.

The route leaves the airport at Thermi and joins the A1 (PATHE) motorway heading south, skirting the western edge of the Thermaic Gulf. Almost the entire journey is motorway, running across the coastal plain past Katerini with Mount Olympus rising on the right for the second half of the trip. The road is fast and straightforward, so most of the roughly 90 kilometres pass quickly. The change comes at the Litochoro exit: the final few kilometres climb from the plain up toward the town, becoming narrower and more winding as you approach the older streets. Expect the town centre to feel tight for vehicles. In good conditions the total is about an hour to an hour and ten minutes.

If your plan is to hike, tell your driver whether you want the town centre or a continuation up toward Prionia — the mountain road is separate from the town and adds time, and it can be closed by snow outside the summer season. Confirm your accommodation's exact location, since some guesthouses sit on the steep upper lanes where large vehicles cannot easily reach the door. Buy hiking supplies before arriving; shops in Litochoro are small and close early. If you are staying near the beach at Plaka or Gritsa rather than the town itself, make that clear, as they are a few kilometres apart. For an early climb, arrange your return pickup in advance, since taxis from Litochoro back to the airport are limited.
