What Larissa offers arriving travellers
Larissa is the capital of the Thessaly plain and one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in Greece. The First Ancient Theatre sits right in the centre, uncovered beside the pedestrianised streets around the main square. Frourio Hill and Alcazar Park stretch along the Pineios River, which locals walk in the evening. Most visitors are here for work, study or as a base: the city is a natural hub for reaching Meteora at Kalambaka to the west, the beaches of Pelion to the east, and Mount Olympus to the north. Summer is hot and dry on the plain, so many residents head to the coast at weekends. The centre is flat and easy on foot, with tavernas and cafés concentrated near the theatre and the Bezesteni Ottoman market.
The drive south on the A1 through Tempe
The route runs almost entirely on the A1 (E75) motorway heading south from the airport towards Athens. After leaving the Thessaloniki ring road, the road crosses flat coastal land, then threads through the Tempe (Tempi) valley between Mount Olympus and Mount Ossa, where the Pineios River cuts the gorge. The modern motorway uses a series of tunnels here that bypass the old narrow riverside road, so the passage is quick and smooth. There are toll stations along the way. Beyond Tempe the road opens onto the Thessaly plain and the Larissa exits appear. The whole trip is around 150 kilometres and roughly 90 minutes at motorway speed, with no winding mountain sections once you leave the gorge behind.
Planning your Larissa transfer and onward trips
Because the drive is motorway most of the way, it stays reliable even in poor weather, though the Tempe tunnels can slow slightly during summer holiday traffic heading to Athens and Pelion. If Larissa is your base for day trips, tell the driver your final neighbourhood: the centre near the ancient theatre has restricted and pedestrian streets, so drop-offs often work best at a nearby corner. Larissa also has a mainline railway station on the Athens–Thessaloniki line and a KTEL bus terminal if you plan to continue by public transport. For Meteora, allow around an hour onward by road to Kalambaka. Keep your flight details with the booking so pickup can be adjusted if arrivals shift, and confirm any child-seat needs in advance, especially for family trips to the coast.
