What Melilla is and who goes there
Melilla is a Spanish city on the North African coast, bordered by Nador province. Its walled old town, Melilla la Vieja, sits on a rocky headland above the port with its four fortified enclosures and the Iglesia de la Concepción. The lower town is known for Modernist and Art Deco buildings by Enrique Nieto, concentrated around Plaza de España and the Parque Hernández. There is a compact marina at Puerto Noray, and city beaches such as Playa de los Cárabos and Playa de la Hípica. Most travellers on this route are residents, people visiting family, ferry passengers heading to or from Almería and Málaga, and Spaniards handling administrative business. Summer is busiest, when the beaches and seafront promenade fill up.
The Rif coast road from Tangier to the border
This is a long eastbound journey, not a short airport hop. From Tangier Ibn Battouta the route heads through Tétouan and then follows the Mediterranean coastal corridor (the Rocade Méditerranéenne / N-16) past Al Hoceïma and on towards Nador. Much of the middle section runs along the Rif, alternating between coastline and mountain passes, with sustained curves and climbs that some passengers find tiring. Expect roughly six to seven and a half hours depending on traffic through towns and stops. The final approach passes Nador and its lagoon (Mar Chica) before reaching the Beni Enzar crossing on the edge of the enclave. It is a scenic but demanding drive, so plan it as a full-day trip rather than a quick connection.
Crossing at Beni Enzar and planning the trip
Melilla is Spanish, and EU external border, territory, so the transfer normally takes you to the Beni Enzar crossing rather than into the city itself; a Moroccan vehicle usually cannot drive across, and you complete the border formalities on foot. Carry your passport, not just an ID card, and keep it accessible. Queues at Beni Enzar are unpredictable and can be slow at peak hours and holiday periods, so allow generous time before any ferry to Almería or Málaga, or any flight from Melilla airport. Given the distance, consider starting early, agreeing a rest and food stop with your driver (Al Hoceïma or Nador are logical points), and confirming whether you want onward transport arranged on the Spanish side once you have crossed.
