El Araich, known in Spanish as Larache, sits where the Loukkos River meets the Atlantic, about halfway between Tangier and Kenitra. Its Spanish-protectorate past is visible in the circular Plaza de la Liberación (old Plaza de España) and the whitewashed streets running down to the port. Inside the medina you reach the Kasbah and the balcony overlooking the estuary. The Roman and Phoenician ruins of Lixus stand on a hill just across the river, and Jean Genet's grave lies in the old Spanish cemetery. Most visitors are day-trippers, Moroccan families heading to Ras R'mel beach across the water in summer, and travellers combining Larache with Lixus and the Moulay Bousselham lagoon further south. It stays quiet outside the July–August coastal season.

The route runs almost entirely on the A1 toll motorway heading south from the Tangier area. After leaving the airport road you join the motorway and stay on it past Asilah, with the landscape opening into low farmland, cork oak and eucalyptus rather than mountains — this is flat-to-rolling Atlantic coastal plain, not the Rif. The road is smooth dual carriageway for the bulk of the trip, so the ride is uneventful and quick. You leave the motorway at the Larache exit, then follow a short local road down toward the town and the estuary. The final approach into the old town narrows as you near the port and the medina, where streets are tighter. Expect roughly 80 minutes for the full 100 km.

The A1 is a toll road; a private transfer includes the tolls, so you won't stop to pay in cash. If you want to see Lixus, ask the driver to stop there on the way in, since the ruins are on the north bank near the motorway side and easy to add before crossing into town. Cars cannot penetrate the medina, so plan to be dropped near Plaza de la Liberación or the port and walk in with your luggage. Ras R'mel beach is across the estuary and reached separately by small boat, not by the same road. Larache has few large hotels, so confirm your exact address in advance. If continuing to Moulay Bousselham or Chefchaouen afterwards, agree that leg beforehand rather than on arrival.
