Chefchaouen sits in the Rif mountains at around 600 metres, and its old town is famous for lime-washed walls painted in every shade of blue. Most visitors head straight for the medina: the sloping lanes around Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the red-walled Kasbah with its small museum and gardens, and the Grand Mosque. The Ras el-Maa waterfall at the medina's upper edge is where locals still wash clothes, and the trail beyond climbs to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint over the valley. Hikers use the town as a base for Talassemtane National Park and the Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge, about 45 minutes further east. It draws day-trippers, photographers and walkers, busiest in spring and autumn when the mountain heat is mild.

From Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport the route runs south and east, joining the A4 motorway toward Tétouan for the fast first stretch, then continuing on the N2 national road as it climbs inland into the Rif foothills. Expect roughly 115 kilometres and about two hours door to door, depending on traffic near Tétouan. The terrain shifts from open coastal plain to green, folded hills, and the final approach is a steady series of curves as the road gains height toward the town. The last stretch into Chefchaouen narrows, and the medina itself is pedestrian: vehicles stop at car parks and gates near Bab el-Ain or the Kasbah edge, not inside the blue lanes. The mountain light in the afternoon makes the descent into the valley worth watching.

Because the medina is car-free, agree with your driver on the drop-off point in advance: most guesthouses in the old town sit up steep, stepped lanes, so you may walk the final few minutes with your luggage. Pack light or ask your riad about porters. The winding N2 can be uncomfortable for anyone prone to motion sickness, so sit forward and carry water. Cash matters here: many small shops, cafés and the medina car parks are cash-only, and ATMs cluster near Plaza Mohammed V in the newer town, not deep in the blue quarter. Evenings cool quickly at this altitude even in summer, so keep a layer accessible. If you plan to continue to Akchour or Tétouan the same day, arrange the return leg before you set off, as taxis back are not always waiting.
