What Ceuta offers on the far side of the border
Ceuta is a Spanish city on the African coast, so once across the Tarajal crossing you are in Spain and the EU, using euros and Spanish time. The old town centres on Plaza de África, the Royal Walls (Murallas Reales) and the navigable Foso de San Felipe moat. The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo, a saltwater lagoon-and-pool complex designed by César Manrique, sits near the port. Monte Hacho gives views over the Strait, and small beaches like La Ribera and El Chorrillo line the seafront. Many travellers arrive to catch the fast ferry to Algeciras, others for a day of duty-advantaged shopping, seafood and a walk through the compact historic centre.
The coast road from Boukhalef to Fnideq
The airport sits at Boukhalef, southwest of Tangier. The driver skirts the city and heads east toward the Mediterranean, following the corridor past Tetouan and along the M'diq–Cabo Negro coast to Fnideq, the Moroccan town at the border. Expect roughly 100 km and around an hour and three-quarters of moving time, most of it on good dual carriageway with a few slower stretches through built-up areas. The final approach into Fnideq passes resort developments and the busy beach strip before reaching the Tarajal (Bab Sebta) crossing. Traffic thickens near the border, especially at weekends and during Moroccan and Spanish holidays, so the last few kilometres can be the slowest part of the trip.
Crossing the Tarajal border on this route
A Moroccan vehicle cannot drive into Ceuta, so the transfer ends on the Moroccan side at the Tarajal crossing, where you continue on foot through passport control. Carry your passport and, if you need one, your Moroccan entry stamp paperwork ready; the pedestrian queue can be long at peak hours. Once inside Ceuta you'll find taxis and the local bus toward the centre and the port. Change some money before crossing or expect euros only on the Spanish side. If your goal is the Algeciras ferry, check sailing times before you travel and allow a generous buffer for the border. Early morning crossings are usually quicker than mid-morning and late afternoon.
