Arriving in Ulm: the Münster, Fischerviertel and the Danube
Ulm sits on the Danube where Baden-Württemberg meets Bavaria — the far bank is Neu-Ulm. The landmark is the Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster), whose 161.5-metre spire is the tallest church tower in the world; you can climb 768 steps for a view over the river and the Swabian Jura. Below it, the Fischerviertel is a tangle of cobbled lanes, mill streams and the leaning Schiefes Haus. Albert Einstein was born here in 1879. Business travellers come for the fair grounds and the university and engineering firms on the Eselsberg; day-trippers come for the old town and the Danube promenade. Summer brings the Schwörmontag festival and the Nabada river parade in July, when locals float down the Danube on rafts and improvised boats.
The A8 corridor from the airport to Ulm
Stuttgart Airport sits right on the A8, so the drive is almost entirely motorway heading east toward Munich. You climb onto the Swabian Jura plateau — the Albaufstieg near Aichelberg is a long, steady gradient where trucks slow the right-hand lane — then run past Merklingen and the newer high-speed rail crossing before descending toward the Danube valley. The whole stretch is roughly 75 km and normally takes about an hour. Traffic is the main variable: the A8 between Stuttgart and Ulm is heavily used by freight and has recurring roadworks, so weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons can add time. The final approach leaves the motorway at one of the Ulm exits (Ulm-West or Ulm-Ost) and drops onto ordinary city roads toward the centre.
Practical notes for this transfer
The old town around the Münster and Fischerviertel is largely pedestrianised with narrow, one-way cobbled lanes, so a car usually drops you at the edge — near Münsterplatz or the Rathaus — rather than at the door of a Fischerviertel hotel. Tell the driver if you're staying in Neu-Ulm across the river, as it's a separate town centre on the Bavarian side. For trade-fair visitors, Messe Ulm is out toward the Böfingen/Donautal side, not in the centre. If your flight lands late, note that the A8 roadworks zones are unlit in places and slow at night. Ulm's main station has direct fast trains, but for luggage or a group the door-to-door car avoids the change and the walk from the platform through the old town's steps and cobbles.
