Heidelberg sits on the Neckar where the river leaves the Odenwald hills. Most arrivals head for the Altstadt, one of the longest pedestrian old towns in Germany, running along the Hauptstrasse from Bismarckplatz to the Marktplatz. Above it stands the red sandstone Schloss, reached by the Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt. The Alte Brücke and the Philosophenweg path on the north bank give the classic views back at the castle. Home to Germany's oldest university, the city fills with students year-round and with day-trippers and coach groups in summer. Autumn is quieter and the Odenwald forest is worth the walk. Neighbourhoods like Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim across the river are calmer bases than the busy centre.

The route is motorway almost the whole way. From Stuttgart Airport, near Leinfelden-Echterdingen, you join the A8 westbound, then switch to the A5 north at the Kreuz Walldorf/Wiesloch interchange. The A8 stretch climbs and descends through the wooded Filder plateau and past Pforzheim, so expect gradients and, on Friday afternoons, slow patches around the Stuttgart ring. Total road distance is roughly 120 kilometres and the run usually takes around an hour and a quarter in normal traffic. The final approach leaves the A5 at the Heidelberg exits and drops toward the Neckar valley. Once you reach the Altstadt the streets narrow quickly; much of the old town is pedestrianised, so the last stretch to a central hotel can be slow.

Confirm your hotel's exact drop-off point before travelling. Much of the Altstadt between the Marktplatz and Universitätsplatz is closed to through traffic, and drivers are often limited to a short loading stop rather than the door. Hotels on the Hauptstrasse frequently direct guests to a nearby car park such as the Parkhaus P12 Kornmarkt/Schloss or P17. If you plan to visit the castle, note the Bergbahn from Kornmarkt saves a steep climb. For a smoother arrival, staying in Neuenheim or Bergheim keeps you off the pedestrian core while remaining walkable to the centre. Traffic entering the city peaks late afternoon; if your flight lands then, allow extra time. Bismarckplatz is the main transport hub if you need onward trams or buses after the transfer.
