What Podgora is like on the Makarska Riviera
Podgora sits on the southern stretch of the Makarska Riviera, wedged between the pebble shoreline and the steep wall of Biokovo mountain. The town is known for the Seagull's Wings monument (Galebova krila) above the harbour, raised to the Yugoslav Navy and visible from the coastal road. Its beaches are pebble and gravel, with the main promenade running through the Podgora and Čaklje parts of town toward the small marina. It draws families and couples in July and August, plus hikers heading up to Biokovo Nature Park. Neighbouring villages like Drašnice, Igrane and Tučepi are minutes away by car. It's quieter and more residential than Makarska proper, which sits about ten minutes north.
The drive from Split Airport down to Podgora
Split Airport sits at Kaštela, northwest of the city. The fastest route joins the A1 motorway and runs inland behind the coastal mountains, leaving it at the Šestanovac exit. From there the road drops toward the sea, passing through the Sveti Ilija tunnel that pierces the Biokovo range and opens onto the coast just above Makarska. The final stretch follows the D8 Adriatic coastal road south through Makarska and Tučepi before reaching Podgora. Expect roughly 85 to 90 kilometres and about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. The last part is winding and hugs the cliffs, with the sea on one side and Biokovo rising sharply on the other, so passengers prone to motion sickness should sit forward and keep water handy.
Practical tips for arriving in Podgora
Podgora spreads along the coast in several parts — Podgora centre, Čaklje and Podaca further south — so give your driver the exact apartment or villa name and address, since many holiday lets are on steep side lanes above the D8 that satellite navigation reads inaccurately. Some upper streets are too narrow for a full drop at the door; agree a nearby meeting point if your accommodation is high on the slope. Bring cash for local konoba meals, as smaller family-run spots don't always take cards. If you plan to explore Biokovo Nature Park or take the ferry from Makarska to Brač, note that a car helps, as bus connections along the Riviera thin out in the evening. Arrive with sun protection and swim shoes — the beaches are pebble, not sand.
