What Nin is known for
Nin sits on a small island in a shallow lagoon north of Zadar, linked to the mainland by two old stone bridges. Its compact old town holds the Church of the Holy Cross, often called the world's smallest cathedral, plus the remains of the largest Roman temple on the Adriatic coast. What draws most visitors, though, are the sandy beaches: Ždrijac, a long low-lying spit popular with kitesurfers and families with small children, and Queen's Beach (Kraljičina plaža) with its shallow warm water. The working salt pans (Solana Nin) still produce salt by hand, and the mineral-rich mud in the lagoon is used for its reputed healing properties. Summer is the busy season; spring and autumn suit walkers and cyclists.
The drive from Split Airport to Nin
The airport sits at Kaštela, between Split and Trogir. The route joins the A1 motorway and runs northwest toward Zadar, an easy, fast stretch through inland karst hills with occasional sea views near Šibenik. You'll pass through several tunnels before leaving the motorway at one of the Zadar exits. From there the road becomes local: you skirt the northern edge of Zadar and follow the coastal plain past Zaton toward Nin, roughly the last twenty kilometres on ordinary two-lane roads. The final approach crosses the lagoon on a stone bridge into the old town, where streets are narrow and largely pedestrian. Expect around an hour and forty minutes in normal conditions, though summer traffic near Zadar and the coastal resorts can add time.
Practical tips for this route
The old town core is pedestrianised, so a car cannot reach most accommodation inside the walls; agree a drop-off point at one of the two bridges and be ready for a short walk with luggage. If you're staying at Zaton Holiday Resort just outside Nin, note it's a large complex with several entrances and gated sections, so give the exact accommodation block or reception name. For beach stays near Ždrijac, roads become sandy tracks in places. Split Airport handles heavy summer charter traffic, so allow extra buffer if you have an onward ferry from Zadar. Shops and restaurants in Nin are seasonal; outside summer, stock up in Zadar on the way. Zadar's own airport is actually closer, so confirm you genuinely need the Split route before booking.
