What Makarska is known for
Makarska sits at the foot of the Biokovo massif, on a curved bay backed by pine-shaded pebble beaches. The old town runs around Kačić Square, with the Franciscan monastery and its Malacological (shell) Museum, and St Mark's parish church nearby. Families come for the shallow, tree-lined main beach and for Nugal, a naturist cove reached on foot along the coastal path. Walkers and drivers head up into Biokovo Nature Park for the Sveti Jure peak and the glass Skywalk viewpoint above the town. Summer brings the busiest crowd, plus late-night spots like Grotta, set in a seafront cave. The marina and Riva promenade fill with day-trippers heading to Brač and Hvar, while nearby Tučepi, Podgora and Brela's Punta Rata beach draw overflow visitors.
The drive from Split Airport to Makarska
Split Airport is at Kaštela, northwest of Split, so Makarska lies on the far side of the city. The quickest route joins the A1 motorway near Dugopolje and runs inland behind the coastal mountains before descending at the Šestanovac or Zagvozd exit toward the sea. The final stretch is a winding mountain road that drops through switchbacks with the Adriatic and offshore islands opening up ahead — the part passengers notice most. An alternative is the D8 Adriatic coastal road through Omiš, slower and much busier in summer but scenic the whole way. Expect roughly 95 kilometres and around an hour and a half in normal conditions. In July and August, the coastal approach and the town's one-way seafront streets can add time, so the motorway option is usually the calmer choice.
Practical tips for this transfer
Many Makarska hotels and apartments sit along the Riva and the beach road, where vehicle access is restricted and one-way. Tell the driver your exact building or hotel name, not just the resort area, so the drop-off point is clear — some addresses require a short walk from the nearest legal stop. If you're staying in Tučepi or Podgora just south, or Brela and Baška Voda to the north, confirm this when booking, as they're separate stops along the same coast. Motion-sensitive travellers should note the mountain descent has tight bends; sitting in front helps. Ferry connections to Brač (Sumartin) leave from Makarska's port, so time your arrival if you have an onward boat. For summer arrivals, an early or late transfer avoids the worst of the coastal-road traffic through Omiš.
