What Hvar Town and the island are known for
Hvar Town wraps around a harbour lined with the marble Riva, St. Stephen's Cathedral on the main square, and the Franciscan Monastery to the south. Above it sits the Fortica (Španjola) fortress, a short climb with views over the Pakleni Islands, which taxi boats reach from the Riva for swimming at Palmižana. Beach-goers head to Dubovica, Pokonji Dol and Milna, while the eastern towns of Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska draw a quieter, family crowd. Summer brings yacht crews and a well-known late-night scene at Kiva Bar and Hula Hula. Inland, the abandoned village of Malo Grablje and the lavender fields around Brusje are worth the detour. The UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain, with its ancient stone field divisions, is best seen in late spring.
The drive to the ferry and the crossing to Hvar
Hvar is an island, so the transfer has two parts. From Split Airport near Kaštela, the road runs east past Solin and along the D8 coastal stretch into central Split, roughly 25 km and 30–45 minutes depending on summer traffic, which is heavy through the city in July and August. From Split's harbour there are two options: the Jadrolinija/Krilo catamaran, which lands foot passengers directly on Hvar Town's Riva in about an hour, or the Jadrolinija car ferry to Stari Grad, followed by a 20-minute drive over the island's central ridge into Hvar Town. The catamaran is faster and drops you in the centre; the car ferry suits travellers bringing a vehicle. Both docks are within walking distance of each other in Split.
Practical tips for the Split Airport–Hvar route
Match your flight to the catamaran schedule before booking: sailings thin out in the shoulder season and the last direct catamaran to Hvar Town often leaves in the early evening. In summer, arrive at the Split terminal early, as catamaran seats sell out and cars queue for the Stari Grad ferry. Note that Hvar Town's old core is pedestrian-only; vehicles stop at the edge, so pack light or expect to wheel luggage over stone lanes and a few steps to your accommodation. If your flight lands late, plan an overnight in Split rather than a rushed crossing. Weather can cancel catamaran runs in strong jugo or bura winds, while the larger car ferry to Stari Grad is more reliable. Coordinate your arrival time so the driver meets the correct sailing.
