What Gradac is known for
Gradac is the southernmost town on the Makarska Riviera, just before the coast opens into the Neretva delta. Its main draw is Gornja Vala, a pebble beach running for roughly two and a half kilometres under a strip of pine trees, which makes it one of the longer swimmable stretches on this part of the Dalmatian coast. Families and campers come here in July and August, with several campsites set right behind the shore. The town sits below the Biokovo massif, and the neighbouring villages of Brist, Podaca and Zaostrog — the last with its Franciscan monastery — are all within a short drive. It is quieter than Makarska or Brela, which is exactly why many returning visitors choose it.
The drive down the coast to Gradac
From Split Airport at Resnik the route runs inland onto the A1 motorway, which carries you most of the way south past Šestanovac and towards Ravča. From there the road descends through the Biokovo hinterland to meet the Adriatic Highway (the D8) near Drvenik, and the final stretch hugs the coastline into Gradac. Expect around two hours in normal conditions. The last part is the memorable one: after leaving the motorway you drop through open, rocky terrain with long views over the sea and the island of Hvar before the road narrows and winds along the shore. Summer traffic on the D8 through Makarska and the smaller resorts can slow things noticeably in the afternoon peak.
Planning your transfer to Gradac
Give your driver the name of your accommodation and, if it's a campsite or a place along Gornja Vala, the specific access point, because Gradac's seafront lanes are narrow and some are closed to through traffic in summer. Many apartments sit on the slope above the D8, so the last approach may involve tight turns. If you're arriving from Ploče or connecting to the Ploče–Trpanj ferry for Pelješac, mention it — Gradac is only a short run south of that port. Stock up on anything you need at the airport or in Makarska on the way; Gradac has shops but a limited late-night choice. For flights landing after dark, book ahead, as the two-hour drive means you'll reach town well into the evening.
