What Drvenik Veliki island is like
Drvenik Veliki is a small, low-key island off the coast between Trogir and Šolta, not a place you drive to directly. Most visitors come for Krknjaši, the shallow turquoise bay on the eastern side widely known as the Blue Lagoon, which fills with anchored boats and swimmers in July and August. The single village, also called Drvenik, sits around a sheltered harbour with a couple of konobas, a small shop and olive groves rising behind it. There are very few cars. Year-round the population is tiny; the island wakes up in summer with day-trip boats from Trogir and Split, sailors, and families renting quiet apartments. Hikers use the old paths across the interior. If you want beach clubs and nightlife, this is the wrong island — it stays calm after the day boats leave.
How you actually reach the island from the airport
Because Drvenik Veliki is an island, the transfer is done in two stages: a short road leg from Split Airport at Resnik to the harbour in Trogir, then a boat crossing. The drive to Trogir is only a few kilometres along the coast and usually takes around ten to fifteen minutes, sometimes longer in peak summer when the old-town bridge area gets congested. From Trogir the Jadrolinija passenger line 604 runs to Drvenik Veliki, or a private speedboat can be arranged. The ferry crossing is not fast and calls at other points, so allow roughly an hour on the water. On the approach you pass the Trogir waterfront and then open channel between the mainland and Šolta before the low, olive-covered outline of the island comes into view.
Planning the airport-to-island connection
The critical detail on this route is the ferry timetable. The Trogir–Drvenik Veliki passenger line runs only a few times a day and is reduced sharply outside summer, so check the current Jadrolinija schedule before you book a late or early flight — missing the last sailing can mean an overnight in Trogir. There is no car ferry to the island, so a vehicle transfer can only take you to the Trogir harbour; from there everything moves by boat, and you carry your luggage onto the deck. If your flight timing doesn't match the public line, ask about a private speedboat, which is the more reliable option late in the day. Bring cash for the island shop and konobas, buy groceries in Trogir, and pack water shoes for the pebble and rock entries around Krknjaši.
