What Brela is known for on the Makarska Riviera
Brela sits at the northern end of the Makarska Riviera, below the steep wall of the Biokovo massif. Its best-known spot is Punta Rata beach, a pine-backed pebble bay, and the small offshore rock topped with a lone pine known as Brela Stone (Brelski kamen), the image on most postcards of the town. A long seafront promenade links Brela with neighbouring Baška Voda, shaded by Aleppo pines the whole way. Families and couples come mainly from June to September for the clear water and pebble beaches; hikers and cyclists use it as a base for Biokovo Nature Park in spring and autumn. The town splits into Donja Brela along the coast and Gornja Brela higher up the slope, with most hotels and apartments clustered near the water.
The drive south from Split Airport to Brela
Split Airport is at Kaštela, northwest of the city, so the route runs south past or around Split. Drivers usually take the A1 motorway inland to the Šestanovac or Zagvozd exit, then descend through the coastal hills to join the D8 Adriatic highway (Jadranska magistrala) just above Brela. An alternative keeps to the D8 coastal road the whole way, slower but with continuous sea views. Expect roughly 75 kilometres and around an hour to seventy minutes without heavy summer traffic. The final section is the noticeable part: a winding descent with switchbacks bringing you down to sea level, then a narrow coastal road with the beaches on one side and hotels stacked up the slope on the other. Some accommodation is reached by steep side lanes off the main road.
Practical tips for arriving in Brela by car
Give your driver the exact hotel or apartment name, not just "Brela": the town stretches for several kilometres along the D8, and Donja Brela, Soline and the beaches near Berulia are all separate stops. Many properties sit above or below the main road with limited turning space, so a photo of the entrance or a pin helps. In July and August the D8 through Brela slows to a crawl in the late afternoon, so an early or evening arrival moves faster. The nearest large supermarkets and the main ferry port are in Makarska, about fifteen minutes further south. If you plan to visit Biokovo Nature Park or take a Brač or Hvar ferry from Makarska, arrange the return pickup time in advance, as roadside parking near the beaches is tight in season.
