What Bol is known for on Brač island
Bol sits on the south coast of Brač and is built around Zlatni Rat, the shingle spit that changes shape with the wind and current. The maestral that picks up most summer afternoons makes it one of Croatia's main windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, so the beaches west of the harbour fill with boards from June to September. Families and couples come for the pine-shaded pebble coves; walkers head inland and up to Vidova Gora, the highest peak on any Adriatic island, for the view down onto the spit. The old town runs along a low waterfront of stone houses, small konobas and the Dominican monastery on the eastern point. Off-season Bol is quiet, with most bars and rental shops closed.
The ferry crossing and drive across Brač
Bol is on an island, so this is not a single road trip. From Split Airport at Kaštela the car runs to the Split ferry terminal in the city, roughly 25 minutes when traffic is light. From there a Jadrolinija car ferry crosses to Supetar on Brač's north coast, around 50 minutes at sea. The final leg is the drive south across the island, about 35 km on a road that climbs through Nerežišća and the interior scrub before dropping in tight switchbacks down to Bol's coast. In peak summer the ferry queue at Split can be long, and sailings are timed, so the total journey commonly runs two and a half to three and a half hours. A summer passenger-only catamaran also links Split directly to Bol.
Planning the Split–Bol transfer around ferry times
Because the transfer depends on a scheduled ferry, timing matters more than on a mainland route. Give your flight number when booking so the driver can track delays; if you miss the intended sailing, the wait for the next Split–Supetar ferry can be an hour or more in high season. Travelling with a car ferry means you keep your luggage in the vehicle the whole way, which is easier than the catamaran where you carry bags on and off. Bol's seafront by the harbour and Dominican monastery is largely pedestrianised, so drivers usually drop off at the edge of the old town or at hotel entrances along the western bay near Zlatni Rat. Confirm your exact accommodation point in advance, as several large hotels share that stretch.
