The drive runs south on the M18 motorway from Shannon towards Limerick, then joins the N21 heading southwest. You pass through Adare, known for its thatched cottages, before the road continues through Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale and into County Kerry. After Castleisland you pick up the N22 for the final stretch into Killarney. The journey is mostly inland farmland and low hills rather than coast, and the N21 is a mix of dual and single carriageway that passes directly through several villages, so speeds vary. Expect roughly two hours. The countryside gets greener and hillier as you cross into Kerry, with the Reeks visible on a clear day as you approach the town.

Because the N21 passes through village centres, allow extra time on summer weekends and during festivals such as the late-summer races at Killarney Racecourse. Many Killarney hotels sit outside the compact centre — the lakeside properties on the Muckross and Kenmare roads have their own driveways, so tell your driver the exact hotel name rather than just "Killarney" to avoid the pedestrianised streets in the middle of town. If you plan to drive the Ring of Kerry, note it's a full-day loop best started early. Shannon is a smaller, calmer airport than Dublin, so arrivals are quick, but there are few late-night onward options — a booked transfer is worth it for evening flights. Bring layers; Kerry weather changes fast even in July.
