The route runs almost entirely on dual carriageway and motorway, so it is fast and undemanding. From Shannon you join the N19 spur, then the M18 north past Ennis, Gort and Clarinbridge, before the road becomes the M6/N6 approach into Galway. The terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland and limestone country on the edge of the Burren, with the low Slieve Aughty hills to the east; there are no mountain passes or tight bends. The final stretch leaves the motorway and slows through Galway's outer roads and one-way system, which can back up at peak commuter times and during festival weeks. Total distance is around 90 kilometres and the drive normally takes a little over an hour, longer if you arrive into afternoon city traffic.

Much of Galway's centre around Shop Street, Quay Street and the Latin Quarter is pedestrianised, so ask your driver to set down at Eyre Square or the nearest hotel loading point rather than expecting door access on the narrow lanes. If your hotel is in Salthill, mention it in advance, as it is a separate run along the coast road west of the centre. During race week in late July, arts festival dates and busy weekends, allow extra time as approach roads and hotel drop-offs get congested. Weather here changes quickly off the Atlantic, so keep a rain layer accessible in the cabin rather than buried in checked luggage. If you plan onward trips to Connemara or the Aran Islands ferry at Rossaveel, a private transfer avoids the limited direct public options from the airport.
