Ennis is the administrative and market town of County Clare, built along a bend of the River Fergus. Its centre is a maze of narrow, curving medieval streets around O'Connell Square, where a column honours Daniel O'Connell, who was elected MP here in 1828. The 13th-century Ennis Friary, a Franciscan ruin with fine carved tombs, sits close to the water. The town is a stronghold of Irish traditional music: pubs along Abbey Street and O'Connell Street host sessions year-round, and the Fleadh Nua festival fills the town each May. Glór is the main arts venue. Many travellers use Ennis as a base for the wider county — the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Doolin and the golf and surf at Lahinch are all within easy reach by road.

The route from Shannon Airport to Ennis is short and almost entirely motorway. From the airport slip road you join the M18 heading north, a fast dual carriageway that runs across flat, green inland Clare farmland — no coast, no mountains, and little to slow you down. The journey usually takes around 25 minutes and covers roughly 24 kilometres. You leave the motorway at one of the Ennis junctions, after which the character changes quickly: the approach roads feed into the town's tight one-way system and narrow historic streets, which can be slow at peak times. Drivers heading to a town-centre hotel will often drop you as close as the layout allows, since some lanes near the friary and O'Connell Square are pedestrianised or restricted.

Because Ennis is so close to the airport, this is one of the shortest transfers in the region — useful if you land late, as the town has more hotel choice than Shannon village itself. If your final destination is the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin or Lahinch, Ennis is a logical staging point but still 40 minutes to an hour further west, so plan onward travel accordingly. Parking in the town centre is limited and the one-way system is confusing for first-timers, which is a good reason to be dropped at the door rather than driving in yourself. If you're arriving for the Fleadh Nua in May or a busy market day, tell your driver your hotel name in advance, as some central streets are closed to traffic and a nearby drop-off point may be needed.
