The Cliffs of Moher rise to around 214 metres at their highest point near O'Brien's Tower, a stone lookout built in 1835 that marks the main viewing area. Most day-trippers come between May and September, when the puffins nest on Goat Island and the light lasts into the evening. Serious walkers use the Coastal Walk that links Doolin to Hags Head, a route with unfenced edges and no railings for long stretches. Nearby Liscannor and the surfing town of Lahinch give people a base for a longer County Clare stay, and Doolin is the departure point for boat trips beneath the cliffs.

The route leaves Shannon Airport and heads north-west, typically joining the N18 briefly before turning onto the N85 towards Ennis and Ennistymon. This is a mix of dual carriageway and single-lane national road, running inland through farmland rather than along the coast for most of the way. After Ennistymon you pick up the R478, which passes through Lahinch and Liscannor before the final climb to the cliffs. The last stretch is a narrower rural road with hedgerows and occasional tractors, so the pace drops. The whole journey runs about 70 minutes in normal conditions. In July and August traffic around Lahinch and the visitor-centre car park slows things down, and coach movements near the entrance can add a few minutes at the end.

The cliffs are fully exposed to the Atlantic, so wind and horizontal rain are common even on a bright morning; bring a proper jacket rather than an umbrella, which is useless up there. The visitor-centre car park is the only official parking, and it fills by late morning in summer, but with a private transfer you're dropped at the entrance and skip that scramble. Allow at least 90 minutes on site to walk both directions from O'Brien's Tower. If you want the boat view from below, book the Doolin ferry in advance and factor in the short drive north. Consider pairing the trip with Doolin's traditional-music pubs or the Burren's limestone landscape on the way back, since your driver can route through either without much detour.
