What Cabanas de Tavira is actually like
Cabanas de Tavira is a former fishing village on the Ria Formosa lagoon, a couple of kilometres east of Tavira. Its main feature is the waterfront boardwalk lining the channel, where small ferries and water taxis run across to Praia de Cabanas, a long sandbar beach on the island opposite. There is no bridge, so the crossing is part of the routine. Restaurants along the front specialise in grilled fish and clams. It draws families and couples looking for a quieter base than Vilamoura or Albufeira, busiest from June to September. Benamor Golf sits just inland, and the walled hamlet of Cacela Velha, with its church and clam beds, is a short drive east. Most accommodation is low-rise apartments and villas near the water.
The drive from Seville across the border
The route is almost entirely motorway. From Seville Airport you join the A-49 heading west across the flat farmland and marshland of the Guadalquivir basin, passing Huelva, before reaching the border at the Guadiana bridge near Ayamonte. There you cross into Portugal and pick up the A-22 (Via do Infante), which runs the length of the Algarve. Remember the clocks: Portugal is one hour behind Spain, so you gain an hour on arrival. The A-22 is an electronic-toll road with no booths, gantries reading plates automatically. The final stretch leaves the motorway near Tavira and drops onto local roads into Cabanas, which are narrow near the waterfront. The whole journey is around two hours in normal traffic, with no mountain sections.
Practical points for this route
The A-22 tolls are the main thing to sort out. With a private transfer the driver handles them, but if you were driving yourself the electronic system catches out many visitors, so it is worth confirming tolls are included. Set your phone clock to Portuguese time when you land in Cabanas to avoid missing the beach ferry or dinner reservations. If your villa is on the waterfront side, tell the driver in advance: the streets near the boardwalk are tight and some are pedestrian, so the drop-off may be at the nearest accessible point. For late arrivals, note that shops and the ferry wind down early out of season. Cabanas has no train station, so onward trips to Tavira, Faro or the airport rely on road transfer or the local line at Tavira.
