What Zaton offers on the Dubrovnik coast
Zaton sits on a long sheltered bay about 10 km northwest of Dubrovnik's old town, split between the settlements of Zaton Veliki and Zaton Mali. It is a quiet alternative to the walled city: stone waterfront houses, a small harbour where fishing boats and pleasure craft tie up, and calm swimming spots along the bay rather than big sandy beaches. Families and couples use it as a base for day trips into Dubrovnik and boat outings to the Elaphiti islands (Koločep, Lopud, Šipan), which are easy to reach from nearby jetties. It is busiest from June to September; outside that window many restaurants and rental villas wind down. The bay's flat waterfront paths make it popular with older travellers who want the coast without Dubrovnik's stairs and crowds.
The drive down the Neretva valley to the coast
The route leaves Sarajevo and follows the M17 corridor south through the Neretva valley, a mostly two-lane road that threads past Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar. This is inland and mountainous at first, with river gorges and slow stretches behind trucks, so it rarely feels like a motorway run. Below Mostar the road continues through Čapljina before crossing into Croatia near Metković and joining the Adriatic road (D8). From there it runs along the coast, briefly re-entering Bosnia at the Neum strip, then over the Pelješac approach and past Ston toward Dubrovnik, with Zaton reached just before the city. Expect around four and a half hours plus border checks. The final approach into the bay is a short descent on a narrow local road off the main coastal route.
Border crossings and timing for this route
This journey crosses international borders more than once, so keep passports and any visa or residence documents within reach, not packed in the boot. The Neum coastal strip means you leave Croatia, pass through Bosnia, then re-enter Croatia; queues here can add real time in July and August and on weekend afternoons. Note that Croatia is in the Schengen area while Bosnia is not, which affects the checks. There are limited fuel and rest stops in the Neretva valley, so use Mostar or the Čapljina area for a break. Because the last leg is coastal two-lane road, allow extra time if you have a fixed check-in at a Zaton villa or a booked island boat. Confirm the exact waterfront address in advance, since Zaton Veliki and Zaton Mali both sit on the same bay.
