Arriving in Zagreb's city centre
Zagreb's centre splits into two moods. The Upper Town (Gornji Grad) holds St. Mark's Church with its tiled roof, the stone Lotrščak Tower, and the short funicular that climbs from Tomićeva Street. Down the hill, Ban Jelačić Square is the meeting point, with the Dolac farmers' market just behind it and Tkalčićeva Street lined with cafés and bars. The Lower Town (Donji Grad) is flatter, laid out around the green squares of the Lenuci Horseshoe, the main train station and the Art Pavilion. Visitors come year-round: café culture and museums in cooler months, terraces and Advent-market crowds in December. Many travellers are here for a city break, a business meeting, or a stopover before continuing to the Adriatic coast or Plitvice Lakes.
The drive north across the Bosnia–Croatia border
This is a long inland journey, not a coastal hop. From Sarajevo Airport the route climbs out of the valley and follows the corridor north through Zenica and Doboj, using the A1 motorway sections where they are built and older two-lane roads in between, so the pace varies. You then cross into Croatia at a border post near Slavonski Brod or Bosanski Šamac, where passports are checked because Croatia is in the EU and Schengen while Bosnia is not. On the Croatian side the A3 motorway runs flat and fast across the Slavonian plain toward Zagreb, entering the city from the east. Expect roughly five to five and a half hours in total, most of it on open road with occasional roadworks and toll booths on the Croatian stretch.
Practical tips for this cross-border route
Carry your passport in hand luggage, not the boot, since you'll need it at the border and the wait can grow during summer weekends and holiday traffic. Croatia uses the euro, while Bosnia uses the convertible mark, so change any leftover marks before the crossing or keep a card handy. This is a five-hour-plus drive, so agree a rest stop in advance — the Croatian A3 service areas near Slavonski Brod are reliable for fuel, toilets and coffee. Note that central Zagreb has restricted-access streets in the Upper Town and around Ban Jelačić Square; drivers often drop off on Tomićeva or a nearby Lower Town street, so tell your driver the exact hotel address. For early flights back, allow generous time given the border and motorway distance.
