The airport lies at Butmir, on the southwestern side of the city, while Vogošća is to the north, so the transfer crosses the length of the Sarajevo basin. Drivers usually skirt the city using the main valley corridor and the northbound M-17/E73 axis toward Zenica, keeping to flat, built-up ground the whole way rather than climbing into mountains. Expect roughly 17 kilometres and about 30 minutes in normal conditions. The section around Sarajevo can slow considerably at morning and evening rush hours, and the approach into Vogošća funnels onto a single main road through the town. It is an urban, valley-floor drive — no winding mountain passes — with the surrounding hills visible on both sides.

Because the route passes through Sarajevo's traffic, allow extra time if your flight departs in the late afternoon; the northbound stretch near the city backs up between roughly 4 and 6 pm. Vogošća's addresses spread along the main road and up several side valleys, so give your driver the exact street and building number plus a nearby landmark — the town hall, a specific mosque, or a company gate in the industrial zone — as satellite navigation can be vague on the residential lanes. Cash in convertible marks (KM) is useful locally, as some smaller shops and cafés do not take cards. If you are continuing north toward Zenica or Tuzla afterwards, this transfer already puts you on the correct side of the city to carry on without doubling back through the centre.
